VIST 110 Design Innovation
College: Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts
Department: Visualization
Type: C
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: VIST 110
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27
We recommend that VIST 110 Design Innovation be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 35% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the total minutes of performance is 10; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:19; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.
Students write five short documents: an analysis of design-writing, an analysis of a reading, research on a design, a user study, and a reflection. Speaking assignments include a design analysis, a concept presentation and a reading analysis/discussion. While students work in teams, all the writing and speaking are individually produced and graded. Every week, students meet with the instructor to report progress and receive formative feedback, including on slides; in addition, before each project final presentation, teams have the opportunity to prepare and practice during lab hours where the instructor gives formative feedback. Instruction includes giving student access to resources related to their assignments such as research papers, articles, talks, lectures, and presentations. Examples are also used.
