REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: VIBS 443

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27

We recommend that VIBS 443 Biology of Mammalian Cells & Tissues be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 25% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:12; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

VIBS 443 is a 4-credit course. Two graduate assistants help with the course. Students write a term paper and turn in two graded drafts that receive written instructor feedback. They also receive feedback on an outline and description and are encouraged to meet the instructor or graduate assistants in office hours to review their writing. There is a lecture on scientific writing offered by Dr. Barbara Gastel, an expert in the field. Students get samples of outlines, descriptions, and final papers for guidance.
