VIBS 311 Biomedical Explorations through Narrative
College: Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
Department: Veterinary Integrative Biosciences
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: VIBS 311
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that VIBS 311 Biomedical Explorations Through Narrative be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 75% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,750; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:24; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
VIBS 311’s individual writing component consists of a medical narrative analysis, an interview with a biomedical professor, and a medical narrative. Formative feedback is provided on all assignments via peer review and the graduate assistants. Students also have the option to request formative feedback from the instructor. Formative feedback emphasizes higher order writing concerns over grammar. Writing instruction includes in-class lectures, group discussions in online and in-person sections, and low-stakes reflective writing assignments. Course readings also serve as models of good writing.
