UGST 405 Thesis Writing

College: Undergraduate Studies
Department: Undergraduate Reserach Program
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: UGST 405

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26

We recommend that UGST 405 Thesis Writing be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 70% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 8700; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:50; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

This is a one-credit course. LAUNCH provides structure and oversight to ensure the completion of W course requirements. Although the instructor to student ratio looks high, the course instructor only reviews some of the assignments, specifically, a research synopsis, a thesis abstract, and a reflection written after students present their research. Students work one-to-one with a faculty member on the research and for feedback on the thesis of 7500 words (estimated). The instruction includes modeling and lecturing on academic and researched writing, and workshops presented by the Library and the University Writing Center.
