REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: STAT 182
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27
We recommend that STAT 182 Foundations of Statistics be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 100% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 5000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:13; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
STAT 182 is a one-credit-hour course. Two graduate assistants help with the course. Students write ten journal entries and two papers. These two papers are submitted in draft form and receive instructor feedback. A general lecture on writing best practices is given in the first week. The Elements of Style is a recommended text.
