REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: SPMT 265

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27

We recommend that SPMT 265 Professional Communication in the Sport Industry be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 60.5% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 4,175; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

SPMT 265 is a 4-credit course. Writing assignments consist of typical genres in the sports industry. Many of the assignments, such as the journal entries and volunteer experiences, emphasize reflection, and the Op-ed and Job Preparation Projects both feature drafts and peer review before submitting the final product. Writing construction consists of modeling, in-class workshops, use of examples, and review during lecture. Students receive both written and oral feedback on assignments, the latter of which is provided in video format.
