REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: SPAN 320
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/25 to 9/1/29
We recommend that SPAN 320 Introduction to Hispanic Literature be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 45% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 8,000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 2:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
SPAN 320’s individual writing component consists of six critical summaries and a final paper. Formative feedback is provided via instructor comments on ungraded drafts of each assignment, peer workshops, and comments from earlier critical summaries applying to later ones. Writing instruction takes place during three different weeks of the course and focuses on specific writing topics.
