College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Hispanic Studies
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: SPAN 303
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/24 to 9/1/28
We recommend that SPAN 303 Spanish Composition and Conversation be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 52% of the final grade is based on individual and collaborative writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3,275 (individual); (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:22; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
SPAN 303’s individual writing components consist of multiple one-minute papers, three short compositions, and three long compositions. Students receive formative feedback from the instructor on the short compositions and one-minute papers that incorporate general writing tips/commentary, and the long compositions undergo a peer review process with an initial draft. For writing instruction, students are given models of exemplary papers, class time is set aside to cover writing concepts and assignment-specific information, and daily assignments emphasize different portions of the writing process.
