REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: RFWN 308
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26
We recommend that RWFM 308 Fish and Wildlife Laws and Administration be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 40% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Two graduate students help with this course every semester. Students write two briefs and produce an outline and draft for each one. The draft is reviewed using a rubric and is also given written instructor comments. Further feedback on common issues is given in class. Besides pointing students to useful sources for writing instruction, two classes include a discussion of communication for the profession, and two relevant videos are assigned for homework. These lessons are reinforced with exercises and reiterated throughout the semester.
