REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: RPTS 402

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26

We recommend that RPTS 402 Park Planning and Design be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 90% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 2250; (3) the total minutes of performance are 24; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:9; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

A teaching assistant helps with this course. RPTS 402 is grandfathered for collaborative assignments. Individually, students write a reaction to a community meeting, a park case study, and a study of open space behavior patterns. They collaborate on a final project paper. They also individually present on a PhotoVoice project, their park case study, and the open space study. They collaborate on the final project presentation; however, on the final project, each students presents at least 3 minutes, four times. Formative feedback consists of peer review on the reaction papers, and slides and a draft script as well as in-process development are reviewed for the final project presentations. Instruction includes review of the grading rubrics, sample papers, and discussion of video examples of presentations.
