REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: RELS 481
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27
We recommend that RELS 481 Advanced Seminar in Religious Studies be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 60% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:18; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
RELS 481 is a variable topics course that is monitored by the Director of Undergraduate Studies in GLAC to ensure that faculty are aware of the requirements for W courses outlined in this proposal. Students write a research topic statement and a research essay, at a minimum. In some sections, students will write more. Students get both peer and instructor formative feedback on the first draft of the research essay. Several class sessions are scheduled for workshopping on writing and focus on revising, analyzing researched writing, and academic writing style.
