RELS 420 Religion and the Environment

College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Religious Studies
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: RELS 420

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26

We recommend that RELS 420 Religion and the Environment be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 63% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3750; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

Students write a reflection on nature, five reading summaries, and a critical synthesis essay. They also complete writing exercises (not counted in the total word count or percentages above). The critical synthesis essay is turned in as a draft and receives written instructor comments; this essay is also peer reviewed. Throughout the semester, writing style is discussed and applied to course readings; students also read essays about writing, complete writing exercises, and work with a sample student paper to practice peer review and revision.
