REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: RDNG 371
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/24 to 9/1/28
We recommend that RDNG 371 Multicultural and Interdisciplinary Literature for Middle Grades be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 48% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
RDNG 371’s writing components consist of a narrative literacy autobiography, two letter essays, and a unit project script. Writing instruction takes place throughout the semester, using both mentor texts and in-class writing exercises. Students receive formative feedback through peer review drafts for each assignment, plus an undergraduate peer mentor (UPM) conference for the second letter essay. These conferences provide formative feedback targeted to specific components of the writing process, including organization and editing.
