College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Psychology
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PBSI 302
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/25 to 9/1/29
We recommend that PBSI 302 Research Methods and Design in Psychology be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 25% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,250; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 2:24; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
PBSI 302 ’s individual writing component consists of an article summary, six assignments that focus on the different components of an APA research paper (title pages and references, abstracts, introductions, methods, results, and discussion), and a final research report. Formative feedback is provided for the final paper via the six component assignments. Writing instruction is provided over multiple class sessions through lecture and examples of good and bad writing in the field. Course readings also serve as models for writing APA research reports.
