PHYS 327 Experimental Physics I

College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Physics and Astronomy
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PHYS 327

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26

We recommend that PHYS 327 Experimental Physics I be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 80% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 5500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:7; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

PHYS 327 is a two-credit course. A graduate assistant helps with the course. Writing assignments include seven lab reports and a term paper.  The lab reports receive instructor feedback as each is completed and before the next is due. The first draft of the term paper is also given written instructor feedback. Students are provided with examples and instructions for writing lab reports, common mistakes are reviewed in class, and technical writing guidelines, including APS format, are covered.
