REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PHIL 414
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26
We recommend that PHIL 414 Nineteenth Century Philosophy be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 62% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 4250; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Students write two take-home essay exams and a final paper for this course. The essay exams get peer reviewed. There is also a peer review of the thesis statement for their final paper. Three classes are devoted to writing instruction during which peer reviews are conducted and students are given time for revision. The three assignments and related workshop classes are designed to help the students develop the necessary skills needed to produce a final paper appropriate to philosophical writing. Examples, writing center guides, and practice are used in instruction.
