PHIL 371 Philosophy of Literature

College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Philosophy and Humanities
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PHIL 371

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26

We recommend that PHIL 371 Philosophy of Literature be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 80% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 10,500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

Students complete 10 reading responses; a book review; an essay engaging a work on philosophical literature; either an essay on a philosophical topic or a short story; and a final essay on a topic approved by the instructor. For formative feedback, they receive written comments on each reading response, and each is graded and returned before the next is due. They are also given the opportunity to revise one essay after receiving instructor feedback on a graded essay. Instruction includes lecture on types of writing and research methods and focus in class on how philosophical arguments are constructed and presented.
