REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PHIL 336
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that PHIL 336 Advanced Topics in Philosophy of Law be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 75% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3,200; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
PHIL 336’s writing components consist of a midterm essay, a research paper, and a final essay. Students receive formative feedback on each paper from two peer reviews and individual meetings with the instructor. Writing instruction takes place through nine in-class exercises, with the instructor guiding students through them and providing feedback after. The exercises focus on specific topics related to the writing process.
