PHIL 334 Philosophy of Law
College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Philosophy and Humanities
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PHIL 334
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/25 to 9/1/29
We recommend that PHIL 334 Philosophy of Law be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 40% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,200; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:2; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
PHIL 334’s individual writing component consists of an IRAC summary and a research paper. Students complete a similar assignment to the IRAC summary in class and then apply the feedback they receive on it to craft one on a different article. Students also receive formative feedback on the research paper through two peer reviews with written comments, and verbal formative feedback through one-on-one meetings with the instructor prior to submission. Writing instruction will consist of several mini-lectures in class on writing topics such as how to conduct research and write an IRAC summary, and students will also complete in-class exercises designed to teach writing skills.
