PETE 436 Petroleum Technical Presentations II
College: College of Engineering
Department: Petroleum Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PETE 436
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/26 to 1/1/30
We recommend that PETE 436 Petroleum Technical Presentation II be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 75% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,200; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
PETE 436’s individual writing component consists of three subsections of a larger paper: the introduction and front matter, the methodology and technical content, and the conclusion, discussion, and back matter sections. Students receive formative feedback via comments from the instructor on the topic of choice and ungraded drafts of the paper at different points in the process, a peer workshop, a workshop on the lit review and citations, and a mandatory consultation with the UWC. Writing instruction includes lectures focused on specific topics, in-class writing exercises, and exemplary models of the assignment components, as well as presentation practice.
