College: College of Engineering
Department: Petroleum Engineering
Type: C
Status: Approved
REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PETE 336
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that PETE 336 Petroleum Technical Presentation I be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 75% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,100; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
PETE 336’s writing component consists of a seminar paper introduction, a methodology section, and back matter (results, discussions, etc.). The instructor provides formative feedback on the student’s topic selection and drafts, which the students can revise and resubmit. Students also participate in an in-class workshop on the lit review and conduct a peer review of their drafts. Students are also required to meet once with a TAMUQ writing center consultant. Writing instruction occurs over multiple class periods and includes lectures on specific writing topics, models of good writing, and presentation practice.
