PERF 312 History of Performance in the Modern Era
College: Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts
Department: Performance Studies
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PERF 312
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/24 to 9/1/28
We recommend that PERF 312 History of Performance in the Modern Era be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 80% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,750; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
PERF 312’s writing component consists of four performance papers. Prior to submitting each paper, students receive formative feedback via peer workshops, and have the option to submit drafts to the instructor for additional formative feedback. Students also have the opportunity to rewrite one of the three papers for an up to 10% grade-boost. Writing instruction is provided over multiple class periods and especially during the workshop weeks, where topics focus on specific components of the papers. Course readings are also used as models for writing instruction.
