PERF 101 Introduction to Performance Studies
College: Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts
Department: Performance Studies
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: PERF 101
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27
We recommend that PERF 101 Introduction to Performance Studies be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 47.5% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3850; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:15; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Students write three performance analysis papers, a performance proposal, a performance abstract, and a performance reflection. The three analysis papers get written instructor feedback on drafts and get peer review. Instruction includes helping students understand how to write peer reviews, and at least two workshops are scheduled, one on pre-writing and one on clear and concise style. University Writing Center interactive modules are used for in-class exercises, and examples are provided for performance abstracts.
