OCEN 410 Ocean Engineering Laboratory
College: College of Engineering
Department: Civil Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: OCEN 410
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/24 to 1/1/28
We recommend that OCEN 410 Ocean Engineering Laboratory be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 77% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 5500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:9; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
OCEN 410 is a 2-credit course that has the assistance of a graduate student and a writing specialist. Students individually write seven reports: three lab reports, and four data analysis reports. The three lab reports are given formative feedback before a grade is assigned. The writing specialist discusses general writing issues as seen in drafts during lectures; in addition the writing specialist gives three lectures on writing and makes resources such as handouts available. In four additional lectures, the writing specialist reviews drafts of the lab reports in class (including one written collaboratively, not counted above).
