College: College of Engineering
Department: Nuclear Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: NUEN 405
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25
We recommend that NUEN 405 Nuclear Engineering Experiments be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 60% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 7900; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:15; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Graduate assistants help with this course. Individually, students write a full lab report, a short report, and three executive summaries. They also collaborate on two technical memos. (The course is grandfather for collaborative writing.) The full lab report is peer reviewed, and students are encouraged to proofread each other’s papers prior to submission. Instruction include two lectures on writing, review of samples and of relevant sources for guiding writing such as the AIP Style Guide, and review of common errors.
