REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MUSC 300

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27

We recommend that MUSC 300: Music Research & Writing be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 90% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3,750; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

In MUSC 300, students practice writing documents in multiple disciplinary genres: program notes, an artist statement, a script for a music journalism podcast, a research paper, and methodology responses. Students receive instructor feedback on drafts for all of the listed assignments, plus peer review feedback on the program notes, artist statement, and research paper. One course session is set aside to focus on how to conduct effective peer review, and additional course days are set aside for instruction on best practices for writing in the listed genres. Two University Writing Center workshops on prewriting and writing with clarity and concision will also be scheduled.
