REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MSEN 302
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/24 to 1/1/28
We recommend that MSEN 302 Unified Materials Lab II be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 33% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:10; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Students in MSEN 302 write four progress memos and two lab reports. They submit drafts of the lab reports for detailed comments from the lab assistant and instructor. They are also strongly encouraged to help each other with review. Instruction includes a review of examples and sharing of strategies for writing excellent reports, as well as provision of resources on writing, and students are encouraged to use the University Writing Center.
