MMET 422 Manufacturing Technology Projects

College: College of Engineering
Department: Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution
Type: C
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: MMET 422

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26

We recommend that MMET 422 Manufacturing Technology Projects be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 90% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 2950; (3) the total minutes of performance is 12.5; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:30; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

This is a two-credit hour course. Students write two progress memos, the approach section for a mid-term report, and a final report results section. They also keep a logbook. For speaking, they present a progress report, a mid-term design review, a mid-term report, a final design report, and a final report. Their preliminary writing assignment is not graded but is peer reviewed and discussed in class. The final version of the report is peer reviewed, and the report itself is scaffolded. Students give a preliminary ungraded oral presentation, and they get feedback via a detailed rubric. Instructor comments are given on slides before the final presentation is delivered. For instruction, students get detailed rubrics and a combination of modeling, lecturing, and discussion on public speaking and on common issues of concern, and they get practice through low stakes writing.
