REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MEEN 401
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that MEEN 401 Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Design be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 35% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:24; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
MEEN 401’s individual writing component consists of a design review rough draft and final draft. Formative feedback is provided for the final draft via instructor comments on the rough draft. For the email assignment in the course, students send a draft of their email written for a project sponsor to the instructor for editing before final submission to the sponsor. Writing instruction takes place over several classes, including the first class day being devoted to drafting an email (which features a peer review), and a couple of presentations from the department’s technical writing instructor and writing lecturer.
