REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MEEN 381
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that MEEN 381 Seminar be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 70% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3,750; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
MEEN 381’s writing component consists of seven short pieces, a written report, and a lifelong report. Formative feedback includes ungraded rough drafts of the written and lifelong reports being submitted for instructor comments, and comments on earlier short pieces being applied to subsequent short pieces. Writing instruction consists of course readings being discussed as models for good writing throughout the semester, as well as in-class review of how to approach the assignments.
