MEEN 260 Mechanical Measurements
College: College of Engineering
Department: Mechanical Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MEEN 260
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/2024 – 9/1/2028
We recommend that MEEN 260 Mechanical Measurements be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 33% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 5,100; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 2:24; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
MEEN 260’s individual writing component consists of writing intensive homework, seven lab abstracts, a lab memo, a lab memo, and writing intensive in-class activities. Formative feedback is provided for the lab memo via an ungraded rough draft submitted for comments, and the feedback on early lab abstracts informs subsequent abstracts. Writing instruction takes place over the first four class sessions, with the first session led by the MEEN Writing Coordinator, and in-class exercises focus on writing practices.
