College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Mathematics
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MATH 300
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/24 to 1/1/28
We recommend that MATH 300 Foundations of Mathematics be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 42% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 4250; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:11; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
A graduate assistant helps with this course. Students write a term paper, ten homework assignments that are 150 words each, and ten quizzes of 75 words each. Several drafts of the term paper are submitted and receive written instructor feedback. Class time is devoted to writing mathematical proofs in concise and clear language with proper syntax. Examples and expectations are provided for the term paper.
