MARE 452 Senior Capstone Project II
College: College of Engineering
Department: Marine Engineering Technology
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MARE 452
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27
We recommend that MARE 452 Senior Design Project II be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 95% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,600, with 2,000 of them being individually written; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
MARE 452’s writing components include a number of collaborative and individual assignments. Individual writing assignments consist of a literature review, individual comments on the team lit review, and a summary of individual contributions to the project. The collaborative assignments are the final design technical report and operating instructions, and the project demonstration and design results. Students receive formative feedback (both verbal and in writing) from the instructor when they give weekly status reports. Students are able to revise graded sections and resubmit them for the final report. Writing instruction is provided on specific topics, including research and using technical jargon, through each component of the project.
