MARE 405 Fundamentals of Naval Architecture

College: TAMU Galveston
Department: Marine Engineering Technology
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MARE 405

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27

We recommend that MARE 405 Fundamentals of Naval Architecture be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 40% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 4,000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:16; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

In MARE 405 students complete a 4,000-word final project report that comprises 40% of the final grade, with a rough draft submitted beforehand for formative feedback. Students will either bring their drafts to the Writing Center for formative feedback or submit them to the instructor. There are also a series of lab reports that students write and submit collaboratively that collectively comprise 2,000 words and 20% of the course grade. However, these are not being counted towards the W designation because the proposal does not specify whether all students will directly contribute writing to the reports, nor does it specify whether formative feedback will be given to students on an individual basis. Writing instruction is provided in class prior to the beginning of the project, with an emphasis on the genre, formatting, and stylistic conventions for technical scientific reports.
