REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: MARB 435
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/2024 to 9/1/2028
We recommend that MARB 435 Marine Invertebrate Zoology be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 34% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,400; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:6; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
MARB 435’s writing component consists of a scientific paper, a peer review, and an article critique. Formative feedback is provided on the scientific paper via a graded rough draft (worth 50% of the final) with instructor comments, which students can use to revise for the final. Writing instruction includes a presentation from the TAMUG Writing Lab, a partial class period devoted to a writing lecture, and discussing models of good writing in the field.
