JOUR 490 Journalism as a Profession
College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Journalism Studies
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: JOUR 490
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that JOUR 490 Journalism as a Profession be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 70% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 4,800; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:16; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
JOUR 490’s writing component consists of four feature articles and a final project. Formative feedback is provided via an initial draft of each of the feature articles, and two progress reports on the final project with the instructor. Five writing lab days are scheduled over the semester for writing instruction, and writing instruction itself is a primary focus of the course.
