ISTM 410 Management of Information Systems
College: Mays Business School
Department: Information and Operations Management
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ISTM 410
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27
We recommend that ISTM 410 Management of Information Systems be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 55% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,500 individual, 4,000 collaborative; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
ISTM 410 is a three-credit senior level course that focuses on case studies. Students write a request for proposal (RFP) and five case analyses individually, and a rough draft and final draft of an RFP response collaboratively. Students receive oral and written feedback from the instructor on all five case analyses and the rough draft of the RFP. They are given readings that instruct them how to write well in these genres, as well as templates reflective of ideal examples. Students are also given detailed rubrics for assignments in advance. While the course proposal does mistakenly count the 4,000 word RFP Response twice, this is course still meets the requirements for W recertification.
