ISEN 460 Capstone Senior Design
College: College of Engineering
Department: Industrial and Systems Engineering
Type: C
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: ISEN 460
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/24 to 1/1/28
We recommend that ISEN 460 Capstone Senior Design be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 33% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 1500; (3) the total minutes of performance is 30; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.
Two teaching assistants help with grading and assist students with presentations in this course. The writing component consists of five 300-word assignments on specialized topics, including self-assessment, code of cooperation, and academic integrity. Students will prepare and give six presentations, with each student speaking individually for 5 minutes over each presentation, so that every student speaks 30 minutes total. Students are given the option to submit all written assignments and speech notes/preparation for formative feedback prior to receiving a grade (Writing Assignment 2 and Speech 6 require submissions for formative feedback). Feedback from instructors on earlier speeches serve as formative feedback for subsequent speeches. Writing and communication instruction consists of an overview of speech preparation on the first day, with parts of subsequent lectures devoted to specialized topics. Rubrics are also reviewed in class.
