ISEN 330 Human Systems Interaction
College: College of Engineering
Department: Industrial and Systems Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ISEN 330
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/24 to 1/1/28
We recommend that ISEN 330 Human Systems Interaction be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 33% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2850; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:24; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Graduate assistants help with the various sections of this course. Students write five journal entries. They also complete three other writing assignments related to course content. For example, the third assignment involves analyzing a technology from a sociotechnical systems perspective. The first assignment gets formative feedback on a draft in the form of written comments and a rubric. There is writing instruction every week in a short lecture format and that includes lecture and general feedback on common issues and problems in the writing assignments and one-to-one consultations as needed. Lectures cover writing issues such as audience and purpose.
