REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: INTS 497
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26
We recommend that INTS 497 Independent Honors Study be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 95% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 8850; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:1; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Students in this independent study course write a long research paper under the direction of a faculty member. They also submit a proposal and an annotated bibliography and write an outline (not counted in the word count or percentage noted above). At each stage the instructor provides both oral and written formative feedback. The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers and How to Write a BA Thesis are required texts, and examples germane to each student’s research are used.
