Department: International Studies
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: INTA 481
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that INTA 481 Senior Seminar in International Studies be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 55% of the final grade is based on writing quality (the proposal doesn’t include the rough draft); (2) the total number of words is 4,000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:15; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
INTA 481’s writing component consists of annotated bibliography, a rough draft, and a final paper. Students receive formative feedback via instructor comments on the annotated bib and final paper before submitting them for a grade. Writing instruction is provided through multiple class days with lectures on specific components of the writing process, reviewing models of successful papers, and in-class exercises related to the major assignments.
