College: Education and Human Development
Department: Teaching, Learning and Culture
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: INST 362
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27
We recommend that INST 362 English as a Second Language Methods I be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 39.97% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3,300; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:15; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
INST 362 sets aside class time for writing workshops beginning in the fourth week. The major research paper is broken up into multiple stages so that students can receive feedback throughout the process, and so that the instructor can model and discuss each component. These stages include an abstract, introduction, citation formatting, and rough and final drafts. Feedback is provided by peers, the graduate TA, the UPM, and the writing instructor.
