REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: HLTH 481

We recommend that HLTH 481 Seminar in Allied Health be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 82% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2300; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
HLTH 481 is a one-credit course. Students write a short piece on cultural competency in which they respond to an assigned reading; an assignment in which they research and communicate health information for patient education; an assignment in which they take the dual perspectives as both a patient and provider; and a reflection on their learning. The assignment on communicating health information is peer reviewed. Instruction covers research, paraphrasing, citing, and APA style. The APA style manual is required.
