GEOG 309 Geography of Energy
College: Geosciences
Department: Geography
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: GEOG 309
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/24 to 9/1/28
We recommend that GEOG 309 Geography of Energy be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 40% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
GEOG 309’s writing component consists of one large writing assignment, which is a report on the findings of an electrical consumption assignment. Four drafts of the paper are submitted for formative feedback, and are graded on completion (points taken off the final paper for each failure to submit, which adds up to less than half of the grade for the paper). Writing instruction will be provided over three to six class sessions, with lectures focused on specific topics like the function of each paper section and how to report data in the form of a narrative.
