CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27
We recommend that FINP 201 Professional Development in Financial Planning be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 91.6% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 1750; (3) the total minutes of performance is 5; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.
FINP 201 is a one-credit course. Students write a resume and cover letter for the financial sector and a report on a book related to financial planning, They present on finding and succeeding in a new job in their profession. They get formative feedback in the form of oral comments on their resume and cover letters drafts; in addition, the report is peer reviewed and gets comments on a draft by the instructor. A draft version of the slides for their presentation is given formative feedback as well. Instruction on speaking is provided in class and through a required text, and topics related to both writing and speaking are covered.
