College: Mays Business School
Department: Finance
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: FINC 350
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27
We recommend that FINC 350 Ethics in Financial Decision-Making be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 80% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
FINC 350 is a one-credit course. A teaching assistant is assigned to the course. Students write a short essay reflecting on decision-making in financial contexts. They also write a paper applying ethical decision-making models to a financial ethical dilemma and a third paper that requires reflection on the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute’s Code of Ethics. The third paper is peer reviewed. Students are encouraged to conference with the professor and TA for further feedback. A class workshop is devoted to writing reflections, which will include information on writing critical reflections from the writing center and review of example reflections.
