REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: FILM 469
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27
We recommend that FILM 469 Cult Cinema be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 90% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 4000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
In FILM 469 students write two short research papers, one analyzing a film and one on a textbook chapter; they also write a term paper. Drafts of each paper get formative feedback from the instructor and from peer review. Ten Fridays are devoted to writing labs that focus on various topics such as writing a strong thesis, clarity and coherence, and style.
