ESET 419 Engineering Technology Capstone I
College: College of Engineering
Department: Engineering Technology & Industrial Distribution
Type: C
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: ESET 419
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/23 to 9/1/27
We recommend that ESET 419 Engineering Technology Capstone I be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 90% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 4600; (3) the total minutes of performance is 20; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.
ESET 419 is grandfathered for collaboration. One graduate assistant and one undergraduate help with each section. Individually, students write a project memo (700 words each) and give three project update presentations (5 minutes each). Collaboratively, they work in teams of 4 to present the project planning review, with each team member speaking for at least 5 minutes; they also write a technical proposal, and each team member contributes at least 2500 words. A draft of this proposal is submitted for written feedback from both the undergraduate assistant and the instructor. They also get feedback from a faculty advisor who is familiar with their project. In addition, the individually written memos are turned back for revision as many times as needed until they are deemed adequate. The individual weekly update presentations give students practice in speaking as well. Lecture time is devoted to public speaking, and guest speakers give advice on oral presentations; students are given online resources to help with technical writing.
