REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ENGL 355
 
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26                  
 
We recommend that ENGL 355 The Rhetoric of Style be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 60% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 7050; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
 
Students write 10 homework responses and two papers on the topic of style. Students participate in peer evaluation workshops prior to submitting each paper, based on a series of guided questions. Students have the option to rewrite Style Paper 1 for a final grade. Instruction includes detailed handouts with writing instructions, with some examples. The Homework Responses build into the Style Papers, so students are practicing how to use the course concepts and structure them into a writing assignment. Editing and revising strategies are explained, and templates for introductions and conclusions are provided.
