ECON 465 Contemporary Economic Issues
College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Economics
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ECON 465
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/25 to 9/1/29
We recommend that ECON 465 Contemporary Economic Issues be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 45% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,700 (minus the rough draft); (3) the instructor to student ratio is 2:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
ECON 465’s individual writing component consists of a paper proposal, a rough draft, and final research paper. Students will receive formative feedback via two peer reviews of their rough draft, plus instructor comments on the rough draft that they can apply to the final paper. Writing instruction will take place over several course days and focus on different writing strategies, with the possibility of in-class presentations/workshops from the University Writing Center.
